Abstract

In India, marriage is generally considered a life time union of man and woman, and separation, desertion or divorce are generally disfavoured. Despite the legal provision for divorce and annulling of marriages, these are not resorted to either by the husband or by the wife except in a few cases of acute problems. Even when one of the spouses suffers from severe mental disorder like that of chronic schizophrenia etc., attempts are made the family unit together. This leads to one of the married partners carrying on the bulk of the responsibilities of running the household, managing the children, the sick spouse and also putting up with all the difficulties arising out of the illness of the spouse. Though such problems also arise where one of the spouses is physically ill, yet the problems are far more complex and serious in the case of mental illness. The mentally
