Abstract

The relationship between spirituality and mental health is increasingly recognized as significant in clinical and research settings. Understanding how spiritual beliefs, practices, and experiences affect recovery from mental illness and the development of coping mechanisms is crucial for inclusive care. This abstract summarizes the role spirituality plays in these processes, utilizing synthesized secondary data. This review involves analysing secondary data, such as existing peer-reviewed literature, and qualitative datasets from previous studies. The methodology focuses on identifying patterns and correlations between reported levels of spirituality/religiosity and mental health outcomes, recovery paths, and the types of coping mechanisms used by individuals with mental health challenges. Findings consistently show that spirituality is a vital resource for many individuals. Spiritual beliefs and practices (such as prayer, meditation, and community service) are often positively correlated with increased hope, resilience, a sense of purpose, and subjective well-being. Spirituality often provides a framework for meaning-making during adversity and encourages positive coping strategies (e.g., positive reappraisal, seeking spiritual support). In conclusion, spirituality can have a variety of positive roles in mental health recovery and coping. It acts as a source of strength, meaning, and social connection for many individuals navigating psychological distress. Mental health frameworks that acknowledge and incorporate sensitive spiritual assessment and support have the potential to greatly improve recovery-oriented practices and general well-being.
