A study of mental illness in nuclear and joint family

Studied 1,084 new cases referred to the outpatient department of an Indian mental hospital during a 9-week period. The ratio of nuclear to joint (extended) families was 7 to 3. It is concluded that type of family and diagnosis are 2 independent variables; no relationship was found between psychiatric disorders and type of family.
